Scouts work at women veterans home

Lady Veterans Connect got some needed help from local Scouts this month in cleaning up the grounds around its transitional housing facility for female military veterans at the former Trapp Elementary School.

On July 15, youth from Boy Scouts Troop 22 and Clark County Girl Scouts came out to move lumber, concrete and other material to clean up the site.

The Friday before, the boys also provided the muscle to unload a large truckload of donations to the home.

“They were doing cleanup and general outside work, and they did a great job,” Phyllis Abbott, executive director of the veterans group, said. “It was a true blessing.”

Lady Veterans Connect is a program to help homeless female military veterans with shelter and other services.

Abbott started the organization in 2012 under another name and opened the first home, the Thurman-Abbott House, in 2016 in Lexington. Also that year, the group purchased and began renovating the old school at Trapp to provide a larger residence for 32 veterans.

According to The Winchester Sun’s online archives, the new facility is completed and was to have been dedicated in April, but then the coronavirus pandemic hit and plans were put on hold.

Abbott said Thursday she is taking applications and hopes to be able to house women veterans at the facility by August.
